Strong rules have helped make Britain great. They protect our families, safeguard our green spaces, help the most vulnerable, and allow UK businesses to thrive. In short, they underpin much of what we love.

But these rules only work if they are properly enforced. Most businesses take pride in doing the right thing, but others will take every opportunity to cut costs by cutting corners. Banking scandals, the financial crisis, the horsemeat scandal, VW fiddling their emissions tests, fly-tipping and waste crime, pollution of our rivers, animal cruelty, and the persecution of wildlife – we’ve all seen what can happen when business activity is left unchecked.

Over many years the local and national enforcement teams who help to keep us safe have had their funding slashed. As a result enforcement activity has plummeted, leaving rogue businesses free to undermine the protections that we take for granted, and risking the health of our families and our natural environment.

We think Britain deserves better. Unchecked brings together organisations and individuals working to protect people and the planet, to make the case for stronger protections of the things that matter.
